Historically haemophilia treatment has been a large and significant part of Baxter. This long history
is reflected in our commitment to developing products and services which support both patients, healthcare professionals and the wider haemophilia community. In fact, Baxter Healthcare have been involved in the development and supply of treatment for haemophilia for over 40 years and some key milestones can be seen below:

1966

First factor VIII concentrate available from Baxter

1979

Baxter introduces the first anti-inhibitor coagulant complex for people with inhibitors to factor VIII

1983

Baxter introduces first heat-treated factor VIII concentrate available in the United States. The introduction of new virus inactivation techniques for plasma-derived clotting factors led to major advances in the safety of these products

1987

Baxter pioneers the first human clinical trials of a recombinant factor VIII concentrate

1992

Baxter introduces the first recombinant (or genetically engineered), generation one, non-plasma-derived factor VIII concentrate. These factors are manufactured using cell banks rather than donated plasma, however, all these products contained pasteurised human albumin in the production process as a stabiliser added to the final product

2003

Baxter introduces the first generation three recombinant product. These products do not use human or animal proteins at any stage of manufacture.

However, our commitment does not stop there.  A dedicated Research and Development facility, as well as partnerships with many other innovators in the area, means that our pipeline for new haemophilia products is strong and has a continued focus on patient safety, product efficacy and convenience.
