FEIBA - The Basics

What else should I know?

FEIBA is made from the plasma taken from blood donations.  This is collected from carefully selected donors in the United States.

As with all plasma-derived products, the potential to transmit infectious agents cannot be totally ruled out.  This applies to diseases we already know about, and also those that have not yet been discovered.

Further information for patients and their families is contained in the 'About FEIBA and plasma safety' booklet available here

To reduce the risk of transmitted infections, donors are selected very carefully, and all donated blood is tested.  All donors are subjected to a very strict interview and medical examination - possible donors with any possible risk for a relevant infection are not accepted.  Donations are collected on a regular basis and these medical tests are repeated each time.  All donated plasma is tested for antibodies to particular diseases - any donation that tests positive is discarded. Further sensitive DNA tests help to ensure that viruses are not transmitted by factor concentrates.

In the unlikely event that viruses are still present in the raw materials, further safety measures in the manufacturing process are designed to inactivate them using heat treatment and remove them via very fine filters (nanofiltration).
